Show Your US 1847 Issue Stamps & Covers

I acquired this in 2020 from a dealer that I bought several other high points with major faults from. I am sure someday, I will find a nice # 2 to sit next to it, but it's definitely going to be a while.

Picked up a used number 2 to complete my 1847 collection. I was looking for a nice almost artistic cancel on it and I think this red grid cancel fits the bill.

As had Wshuwahere77, back in the summer I picked up this #2 to finish my 1847 issues. I'd wanted one with a regulation grid cancel (my #1 varieties have MS and town cancels). This one is reasonably on-target and light, so I was pleased enough with it.

Here are my Proofs.

Brown Orange (Scott 1d) and Orange Brown (Scott 1b)

Supposedly the Brown Orange was certified by the PF, but the cert is missing, and too old to find on the PF search. I've compared them to other stamps I have and to the excellent guide published by Siegel in the Gross 1847 catalog. I'm reasonably confident, but not sure I'll be able to sell without certs. May have to fork them over for that.

rlsny, too bad you didn't get the 1-c along with these two --- that one is where the real money is at! It is hard to tell from the image, but the Brown Orange (on the left) looks pretty good, color-wise. Even so, a cert would be a good 'guarantee' that it is what it is claimed to be. I love the 1847's!! Thank you for sharing.

The stamp on the right looks like an intermediate impression and orange brown is not known in that impression. The worn plate stamp on the left looks like it could be brown orange for sure.

Thanks rog - I will keep that in mind - I don't have much to go on on that one - just the opinion of the last owner. Might have to send in before attempting to list.

Here is a link to the auction. It is lot 21. The 1987 PF cert calls it a normal red brown #1 but the 2020 PSE cert calls it a brown orange.

rlsny - Good luck with your 1d. Those rare colors mostly have to be expertised.

Study of the colors of #1 is a very interesting sidebar. It can be similarly maddening and rewarding as compared to 3c 1851 issue color study. Many people might not know (or care), but Bill Amonette, the (now departed) well-known 3c color expert, in addition to doing 3c 1851 colors, also had a collection of #1 colors, which he showed me once.

I love the temperance theme on the #1 covers.

The question of the day, however, is, if you have one-half of a #2 on cover, does that make it a #1 ?? (yes, I'm being sarcastic and humor is intended)
