Posted from onboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger while stationed in the waters adjacent to Vietnam supplying combat air support in Vietnam. This one is a little less direct. The 327th Air Division was stationed in Taiwan but from 1966-1973 it controlled and was the base for an USAF airlift wing for USAF air support in Vietnam. |

LaoPhil - 3rd Anniversary of the Establishment of the National Liberation Front (I) - October 5, 1963.
In 1963 my family was in Yokosuka Japan, my dad being in the navy. On one return trip from Hong Kong he brought me and my brother some packets of stamps from China. Included in it were the stamp series you had shown. Most notable to me at the time was one with the US helicopter being shot down. Of course at the time Scott was banning listing stamps from North Viet-Nam (among others). Being young, I thought I was quite the criminal having these "banned" stamps in my collection. Best to you, Pat

@me(Parcelpostguy)
I failed to include "US Scott 1341" in my posting above for future search returns for that issue. |

Best to you, Pat Many thanks, Pat! great story. I was born in 1961, grown in Israel and I don't remember we, the collector kids, saw stamps from Vietnam at all. All we had were stamps from Western countries, especially USA and the cheap East European countries stamps we used to buy in small packets. During Vietnam War, many countries issued stamps to support North Vietnam. I personally add them to my collection. Here is a stamp issued by Algeria on February 17, 1973 with the slogan "Homage to the Vietnamese People" and 27.1.1973, the date of the Signing of the Vietnam Peace Agreement in Paris. I enclose also the FDC issued:

Operation Brotherhood During Vietnam War, from October 1954 until December 1956, Filipino medic teams went to South Vietnam for humanitarian aid, with the approval of Magsaysay, the 7th president of the Philippines. Their efforts were known as Operation Brotherhood, which received international support in order to help the operation's goals to aid the Vietnamese refugees. The first "Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding" is given to "Operation Brotherhood" in acknowledgement of the spirit of service to other peoples in a time of need. Operation Brotherhood, issued by South Vietnam in 1956. Designed by Ngo Cong Ho, Taiwan and engraved by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, Tokyo:

Going through a Vietnam lot recently acquired, mostly stamps and a few covers, among them is this this interesting item - also hoping someone is familiar with it, as unlisted in Scott & unable to find similar on Hipstamp, eBay or Delcampe. This first day of issue "de luxe sheet" from the 1961 series for the re-election of President Ngo Dinh Diem. It appears to be signed in ink by him. On the back is only "35" in pencil. Thanks! Hello gmot,
First time I see this kind of sheet. Searching the commemorative catalogue issued by the SICP, I found that five different sheets were issued inside a vinyl booklet appears in blue cover or green cover (each sheet has several types). Here is an excerpt from "Booklets of South Vietnam" by William N. McGlaun published in the Indochina Philatelists, Vol XX, No. 2, 1990:
15. Diem "Luxury Sheet" booklet-booklet measures 115mm x 163mm, contains 5 souvenir sheets of issues Scott *s 39, 158-61, each cancelled on the first day of issue and each sheet bearing Diem's "printed" facsimile signature. Padded vinyl booklet, center announcement area yellow-orange on a field of green. It is reported this booklet also came in a padded blue vinyl cover. **Comment: Since this booklet is printed in English, it would appear this was offered primarily for US Servicemen's consumption and was probably a private enterprise-as, by the way, were many of these "booklets"-rather than being sanctioned by the Postal Authorities. See pages 34 and 35. |

LaoPhil - thank you very much - exactly the kind of info I was looking for! Much appreciated.
The ICP Society looks like it has lots of info available for members, including access to all the back issues. |

gmot Thanks for sharing your 1961 "de luxe sheet." First time I had ever seen one of those myself. Always learning new stuff on SCF. Scanned below is an aerogram I bought last summer at the big show in Crystal, Minnesota, USA. This is Vietnam Higgins & Gage F1, a colorful, microprinted, aerogram which I had never seen before. I purchased this item from Denver, Colorado stamp dealer, Sergio Lugo, who I learned was a combat veteran of the War in Vietnam. Also, thanks to LaoPhil, vayolene, and Parcelpostguy for adding interesting items to this thread. Linus |
