Hermes, the messenger of the Olympian gods, is wearing his sandals. This design is based on an ancient coin from Sybrita, Crete. Stamps were used as definitive from 1911 to 1926:

"The abduction of Europa by god Zeus as a Bull", Greek mythology story on ancient coin from Gortyna, Crete. The stamp was issued for use in Crete in 1908 and later overprinted Greece:

In Greek mythology, Talos was a giant automaton (a self-operating machine, "robot") made by Zeus himself or on Zeus's orders, by the ingenious Daedalus or Hephaestus, god of fire and iron. Talos protected Europa in Crete from pirates and invaders. He circled the island's shores three times daily.
