1945 Canceled Check (Bank Of Montreal) W Newfoundland Stamp

I bought this at a recent stamp show in California.

I collect Newfoundland items and this stamp is the super common #255, but what the heck is this check?

Anything about it, or why it would have a stamp on it would be great. Also, what would the range of values be?

I got it just as a novelty--so just curious.

It is a normal cheque. The stamp was a tax that was at that time imposed for a financial transaction. Most legal documents and pretty well all cheques had either revenue stamps or postage stamps affixed and cancelled. Many of the cancellations were in red ink or otherwise quite identifiable as revenue use - so for a postage stamp used in this manner value is very low. When the cheque cleared it was perforated so it could not be used again.

I know this is a very late reply, but I have over a hundred cheques from a Newfoundland business with stamps on them. I was told that the tax on banking was 3 cents for cheques valued under $100, and 5, later increased to 6 cents for cheques valued at over $100. Normally, inland revenue stamps would be used, but postage stamps were allowed near and after confederation with Canada. I have cheques with Newfoundland Stamps on them, others with Canadian Stamps on them, and some with a mixture of both countries.
