Many moons ago, on page 2 of this thread, I offered some examples of counterparts to these topicals: stamps on wine labels. Today, while exploring the wine aisle in my favorite grocery store, I came upon another one. This one even has a "cancellation"! |

Here is another item relating to harvesting, or grape picking for the wine industry. This circa 1977-85 cancellation of Bad Duerkheim, Germany depicts a grape picker wearing a basket. From wikipedia, "Palatinate (German: Pfalz) is a German wine-growing region in the area of Bad Duerkheim, Neustadt, and Landau in Rhineland Palatinate. And from Google, On July 6, Bad Duerkheim's city council made it official: the 2021 edition of its mega-event, the Wurstmarkt, will not take place for the second year in a row. What's widely billed as the world's biggest wine fest takes place on the second and third weekends of September each year." Covid-19 caused the cancellations. The old grape pickers' baskets shown in the photo are French. |

Here is a November 23, 1987 German (BRD) cancellation commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Munich Purity Law which governed the making of beer. Cancel shows the 'Munich child' holding a stein of beer. From wikipedia, The 'Reinheitsgebot' (purity order) is a series of regulations limiting the ingredients in beer in Germany and the states of the Holy Roman Empire...Although today, the 'Reinheitsgebot' is mentioned in various texts about the history of beer, historically it was only applied in the duchy of Bavaria and from 1906 in Germany as a whole, and it had little or no impact in other countries or regions." |
