KlausR - Welcome to SCF!

Here is an image of a stamp depicting an armed postman and a mailbox bearing the Polish White Eagle, designed by Lithuanian-born Polish artist (and survivor of Auschwitz) Czeslaw Kaczmarczyk (1899-1971), engraved by Edward Konecki, and issued by Poland on September 1, 1958 to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the heroic defense of the Polish Post Office in the Free City of Danzig (Gdansk) from the SS Heimwehr Danzig (SS of the city of Danzig), local SA formations, and special units of Ordnungspolizei (Danzig police), Scott No. 819, SG No. 1060.

our_elephant - Glad you asked. Many intaglio engraved stamps, including those issued by such countries as France, Austria, and Sweden, are usually signed by the engraver as well as the designer. Also, specialized country stamp catalogues and reference books often provide relevant information. Two volumes written by Gene Hessler, The Engraver's Line, and The International Engraver's Line, have richly detailed information about many banknote and postage stamp engravers. The rest of my research results come mainly from conducting online searches and sharing information through email correspondence with other knowledgeable stamp collectors. Although I have spent years studying the works of hundreds of stamp engravers from around the world, there is still much that I do not yet know about many of them. So my hunt for relevant information about them and their art continues unabated. Regards, nethryk
