Checks With Railroad Vignettes

Anyone have some to share?

OK, so the last one is about parlor cars, they run on a track don't they?

Wouldn't it be great to have one of these reproduced for modern usage.

As long as it had the magnetic ink account number printed on the bottom, it would work -- the designs don't matter to the bank.

I've never seen tickets printed with a revenue! Nifty!

I wonder if the parlor cars are like the luxury Pullman Cars? I also have one of those blue Peoples National Bank checks, they really stand out. I really like the Mobile & Ohio RR company check, they had merged with Gulf and became the GM&O RR which my wife's grandfather worked as a USPD RPO clerk.

I don't think the parlor cars were quite as fancy as Pullmans. BUT, not all Pullman cars were "luxury". I think that Pullman owned/ran the sleeper cars in a long distance passenger train. But don't quote me on that. I know more about freight than passenger trains!

Parlor Car definitions:
1. A comfortable railway coach with individual reserved seats.
2. A railroad car for day travel fitted with individual reserved seats. Also called chair car.

Pullman Car definitions:
The sleeping car or sleeper is a railway/railroad passenger car that can accommodate all its passengers in beds of one kind or another, primarily for the purpose of making nighttime travel more restful. The first such cars saw sporadic use on American railroads in the 1830s and could be configured for coach seating during the day. Some of the more luxurious types have private rooms, that is to say fully- and solidly-enclosed rooms that are not shared with strangers.

However, the car can be configured for daytime operation.

I have to admit, I don't know much at all about revenue-stamped paper. Maybe I should actually look into the value of these things!

I really like the check with the perfin canceled revenue stamp.

I snagged a couple more checks concerning railroad companies.





I also got another stock certificate with a U1, for the same Chicago & South Western Rail Road company.

Nice! I like the stamp on the second one. The Boston & Albany is now the CSX Boston Line...

I just came across this old thread and thought I'd give it a bump. I collect engraved checks, but was surprised to find I only had one with a train. Still, it should be of interest to philatelists: a Post Office draft that pre-dates the existance of stamps! This one is from 1837, and at the lower left is a small vignette of a John Bull locomotive, back when railroads were just getting established in the U.S.

Thanks for reviving this thread, Greg. I'm a revenue collector and have started acquiring revenue-related checks and other documents with cool (to me) engraved vignettes. Here are a few with trains.
