I recently came across this in a large lot I won on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I didn't give any thought until I arrived to the task of identifying the BOB material that is in the lot. Then I realized that this is far different than any cut cancel that I've seen before. It's definitely unique to me and will have a home in my fancy cancel study collection. To me it looks like it was embossed with a notary republic seal and not necessarily cut. Have any of you come across something like this before? If so where can I find out more information about such cancels?

That is my assumption too. But I will never know for sure because it was removed from the document who knows how long ago? So I now beg the question should it be considered a cut cancel or something else?

The "cancel" is the manuscript writing across your stamp. It also has an impression of an embossed matching "CCC" corporate or orgainzational seal applied incidentally, which is not a cancel. Here is a "cut cancel" on a R173, note the 3 knife-blade cuts, which would also tie the stamp to the document. |

Thank you John.
So it is in-fact a manuscript cancel and not a cut cancel. Just coincidental that is has a seal pressed into it similar to a notary seal.
Thanks again.

That's my interpretation. I suspect there is enough of the seal visible to determine the original user. Revenue stamps often took quite a bit of extra abuse/markings depending on what they were applied to. |

It would only be a cut cancel if the embossing broke the paper. The embossing is considered a cancel, along with the manuscript cancel. |

That is interesting that it is only considered a cut cancel if the paper is broken. Which it clearly doesn't have broken paper. It now has a home in my collection.

I took a few more minutes to fly speck it some more. The company name on the seal is CCC and is dated 1866 and the manuscript cancel is dated 11/21/1911. Whomever removed it from the original document took great care in doing so because the stamp is in remarkable shape.

The embossed seal says ESTABLISHED 1866; the seal is certainly from the time of the ms. cancel, which is certain to be 1901 at latest. The Battleships were only valid from 1898-1901, with possibly a few usages in 1902. I don't remember the exact tax rates of the time, but I seem to recall that there were a couple that lasted an extra year or so. |

All of the documentary taxes lasted until the end of June, 1902. On the proprietary side, most were abolished after June 30, 1901 except for wine which lasted until the end of June, 1902. |
