Hi all,
I have this (see below) print of the Tas 6d Chalon which I like but it is clearly not a stamp as it is on thin card stock, no gum etc. I assume it may be a proof print made later than the original stamp. It seems a fair assumption to me. I wondered if anyone can shed light on likely when it may been made and for what reason. I am unfamiliar with why some prints were made on card (other than so they may not be turned into stamps surreptitiously - that is a guess on my part). Is anyone familiar with the history or backstory of these? Any recommended references I should look to?
Thanks in advance.

I'd say you're right HarbingerHamster, they are a later plate proof, but when were they made?

Basset-Hull is still the go-to reference, but search the archives at Abacus Auctions. I'd be surprised if they haven't handled similar material before.

Gee, aren't the Chalons a work of art? Just beautiful!

HI Bobby De La Rue again,
Yes they are pretty wonderful in terms of stamp art I think, I guess most (not all unfortunately) states have a small number of designs that are simply stunningly good to see! This is one I like a lot. Yes I will look at Abacus Auctions if I can (was not familiar with it's existence). I know I have seen others on thin card stock before and in fact had one of another Tas stamp years ago but someone else has it now. You are opening up my mind which is great, I was unfamiliar with Basset-Hull also!
Brusden-White is my at home catalogue but too much left of field is not covered. I don't expect these are particularly collectable (I mean of significant value) but it has a happy home in my collection and actually looks in just good shape I wonder just how late it may have been printed. Obviously not being a stamp it has not been subjected to wear at all but it still looks very fine to me. Thanks again.

Mentioned below SG49 in the Tasmania section of the Stanley Gibbons catalogue, these may be from the 1889 reprints (imperforate) on white card.

Examples can be seen in the Millennium Online Sale 79, Lot 400:

A. F. Basset Hull states these (along with a list of other varieties) were ".. chiefly made for presents to countries in the 'Universal Postal Union'. "

Thank you Fairdinkumstamps!
I really think you nailed it with the reference to Lot 400 (Gee, I do wish I had each and every one of them, they are spectacular). I had heard previously of reprints on thin card being made for that sort of purpose but I had forgotten when it was done. I am satisfied now that mine fits exactly in that frame. The 6d Chalon in that set is almost identical to my own except mine shows a notable ink smudge between the top two impressions. I would also be inclined to class the card as cream or straw in colour rather than white (my personal view) but yes close enough to convince me.
Thank you again.
