1976 Iriquoain Indians Unitrade 578 And 579

Not that I trust it much, I checked with ChatGPT today to see if I could find out how many stamps on sheets of 579 had the missing medallion. The response came back that there was only one, in Position 47. Well that is obviously not correct.I only have this issue in Plate Blocks and in the Upper Right, both 579s are missing the medallion (Positions 4 and 10), and on the Lower Right the medallion is missing in Position 50.


Does anyone know if there are any more positions with this variety? My Unitrade (2021) is normally pretty good at reporting varieties and their positions but in this case they come up blank. The do list the variety but not the position. they give a price, but whether this is for one or two 579i is not stated.

It appears that a full pane can contain the error at positions 4, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. Could there be more? Not clear.

Well, I went back to ChatGPT to get a reference for their statement that position Position 47 has the missing medallion. Their only reference was to Arpin! So I took a look at their web site again. and expanded the image of the sheet. Rather embarassing but Position 47 is the se-tenant 578 which, of course, is not the "Iroquoian Encampment" design.

Thanks rogdcam for the Arpin reference. From the Arpin ad, it looks as if the images are laid down on the printing block starting at Position 46 (bottom left finished stamp) and working up the columns to end at Position 5. (I don't know if this was normal in the early days of stamps, but Australian stamp dies seem to have used this approach to roll the dies onto plates). If the same procedure is still use, it looks almost They made it to Position 14, then had to use a new master, or something happened to the original, to finish column 4 and go on to column 5.
