Archaeopteryx (I) Archaeopteryx is a genus of bird-like dinosaurs. The name derives from the ancient Greek archaios, meaning "ancient", and pteryx, meaning "feather" or "wing". Between the late 19th century and the early 21st century, Archaeopteryx was generally accepted by paleontologists and popular reference books as the oldest known bird. Older potential birds have since been identified, including Anchiornis, Xiaotingia, and Aurornis. To commemorate 150th anniversary of the first Archaeopteryx fossil discovery 1861, Germany issued on November 18, 2011 a single stamp shows one of the famous Archaeopteryx fossil discovered in Solnhofen limestone in Bavaria and described by Hermann von Meyer. It is now in the Natural History Museum of Berlin: I have the stamp on covers, each has different commemorative postmark shows Archaeopteryx applied in Archaeopteryx fossil discovery sites in Germany: The Berlin Archaeopteryx specimen: |

Archaeopteryx (II) The Berlin Archaeopteryx fossil specimen shown on previous post, was discovered in 1875 on the Blumenberg near Eichstatt, Germany, by farmer Jakob Niemeyer. It was described in 1884 by Wilhelm Dames, it is the most complete specimen, and the first with a complete head. In 1897 it was named by Dames as a new species, Archaeopteryx siemensii; though often considered a synonym of Archaeopteryx lithographica, several 21st century studies have concluded that it is a distinct species which includes the Berlin, Munich, and Thermopolis specimens. The Berlin Archaeopteryx fossil specimen appears also on stamp issued by DDR on February 6, 1973: FDC with commemorative postmark shows the Berlin specimen of Archaeopteryx lithogrphica: |

Joachim Barrande (1799 – 1883) was a French geologist and paleontologist. In 1831 he accompanied the French royal exiles to Prague. Settling in that city, his attention was attracted to the fossils from the Lower Paleozoic rocks of Bohemia. For ten years (1840–1850) he made a detailed study of these rocks, and obtained upwards of 3500 species of graptolites, brachiopoda, mollusca, trilobites and fishes. Barrande published many books and articles including his great work Système silurien du centre de la Boheme appeared in 1852; On June 23, 1999, the Czech Republic issued a set of two stamps, designed by Jan Kavan, engraved by Milos Ondracek, honoring Joachim Barrande and his work on fossils of Bohemia: Joachim Barrande: Fossils discovered and described by Barrande: Deiphon forbesi barrandei (Trilobite), Ophioceras simplex barrande (Nautilus) and Carolicrinus barrandei: Issued in a mini sheet contains two tabs show different fossils: Two different FDC's with commemorative postmarks show trilobite and ammonite fossils and cachet shows trilobite and Barrande tools: |

Ammonites are the extinct relatives of sea creatures such as the modern Nautilus. Ammonites lived during the periods of the Jurassic and Cretaceous, 140 to 66 million years ago. They became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, at roughly the same time as the dinosaurs disappeared. Ammonites are commonly found as fossils, formed when the remains or traces of the animal became buried sediment that later solidified into rock. Here are engraved stamps show Ammonite fossils: Berbericeras sekikensis, issued by Algeria on August 11, 1952 to publicize the 19th International Geological Convention, Algiers: Ammonite fossil, issued by Cuba on August 29, 1958 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of De La Torre, Cuban natural scientist: Ammonite fossils, designed by M. Siegel, engraved by Wolfgang Seidel and issued by Austria on November 12, 1999 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Federal Geological Institute: |

Trilobites (meaning "three lobes") are extinct sea creatures that lived millions of years ago in the Early Cambrian period (520 million years ago). They had hard, segmented shells and looked a bit like modern-day horseshoe crabs. Trilobites were one of the first animals with eyes and came in many shapes and sizes. They lived on the ocean floor, where they crawled, burrowed, or swam. Trilobites went extinct about 250 million years ago during the Permian-Triassic extinction event and today, their fossils are important for studying Earth's early history. Different trilobites during the Cambrian, issued by Niuago'ou on June 6, 1989 to publicize the 20th UPU Congress: Trilobite fossils, issued by North Korea on July 5, 1997: - Redlichia chinensis - Ptychoparia coreanica Trilobite fossils on two postmarks from Germany: - Mineral market?, Bergheim Erft, 1982: - 100th anniversary of governmental geological services, Krefeld, 1977: |
