I picked up a few interesting covers at the Antonio Torres sale, including these two sent from the US or APO to Palestine in 1944 and 1945. They both have 70¢ of postage on them, but I can't figure out the usage. I think the airmail rate to Palestine was 30¢/oz. If these were each double weight, I don't know what the extra 10¢ would be for. Any ideas?

The FAM rate from August 1940 to the end of October 1946 was 70 cents per 1/2 ounce (same as many other asian destinations).

You really need to buy a copy of the book, U.S. International Postal Rates, 1872-1996, by Anthony S. Wawrukiewicz & Henry W. Beecher, if you plan to collect and understand covers like these.

Copies can be found on eBay, and I believe the APS bookstore has these at a reasonable price.

For Palestine, here is the Page for Air Mail rates as an example.

I cannot imagine anyone who collects US postal history not having a copy of both this and the domestic rate book on their desk.

Mike

Thank you - I have one of these ordered, but it has not arrived yet. I have the domestic rate book.

Philazilla -

The first cover you show here was postmarked APO 305 on 8 JUN 45, which appears to be used in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia according to page 84 of the reference document linked below:

https://archive.org/details/Numeric...view=theater

Also, the return address, line 4, is: Czsla. Indep. Area Bde. Groupe. I think the "Czsla" is short for Czechoslovakia.

Hope this helps,

Linus

Philzilla:

Glad you are adding these to your library.
I would also like to remind everyone we have several files with some updates for both of the Tony Wawrukiewicz & Henry Beecher postal rates books on Stamp Smarter. These can be found at: https://stampsmarter.org/learning/H...yWRates.html

There are also a few corrections to these publications available there as well.

Stamp Smarter also has a copy of the Numerical Listing of APO'S , which can be found on the APO/FPO Book Shelf, found at this page: https://stampsmarter.org/learning/Home_APO.html

This page is found within the section on USPOD publications in the Stamp Smarter Library.

There is a second version of this book on this page as well, which is a reverse look-up directory of where the APO'S were located. This allows the reader to quickly identify what APO'S were present at what location during a designated period of time.

Does the NYC cover have a back stamp? I'm curious to know what the transit time was from the States.
