I have this Plate Block 20 of Scott #1869f - perf 11.2, dull gum, large block tagging. My 2021 Scott catalogue has no value for this stamp. Just a dash. Does this mean that there are no recorded sales? I'm curious what value you would assign to it.

I have quite a few US mint strips (that's what I call them, is there even an official name?) like that, but I don't think they're really a thing. I only keep them (and similar plate blocks) because they were part of my stamp collecting journey, not because anyone else will ever want them.

NOTE: The original post about the website I am writing about here was removed my the Moderator. This post retained, although it is not as relevant as it originaly was.

rogdcam:

I would like to point out that the website you referenced is a SCAM website.

In just a few minutes, I found a cover that is for sale on eBay there, at a 50% discount, and when I checked with the owner, who I happened to know, he was appalled, as they did not have his permission to list the cover in that manner.

Note also the domain name is given as "balckfridaysale.ru" rather than corerctly spelled "blackfridaysale.ru"

Mike

Does that affect the price?

Yes. He's pointing out that the site is pulling listings from other sites on the internet and then assigning prices to them to make bogus sales. They don't have actually have any of those stamps. It's purely to scam people out of money. Facebook is many of these as well. There is no one to make sure that the buyer gets the product. I don't understand why a generic site like that would be a reference point that I should use for value.

At one time Scott explained somewhere in the catalog what a "--" meant. I cannot find such explanation now. So from memory and knowledge, it means they acknowledge that the item exists but there is no enough transactional information to set any price. That could be due to rarity of difficulty in find or more importantly a flat lack of interest and demand by collectors for the item. This different than the italicized pricing which is still defined as being for items rarely traded with values over $1000 as likely set by an auction or other sale price and for values under $1000 as a warning that pricing is based upon infrequent sales.

VALUE? I will start and let others have at my comments:

As to value: To a collector of such a variety, Face to 5x Face. To most collectors 50%-60%
of face as discount bulk postage. To a seller, face value based as valid postage, or whatever a collector of such an item offers should the seller get an offer. This is based upon a face to face transaction with not other selling or buying costs involved.

Simply put, you have a good item that only very few highly specialized collectors want.

The strip in the first eBay listing looks remarkably like that of the OP. Going by the irregular tagging in the margin.

Regardless, what sellers are asking doesn't establish a value. Here's a completed listing for singles priced at $2.75.

Mentioned sold singles average $2.38, less than 5x face. Only 1869f items sold within the last 90 days on eBay.

Pl # BLK of 4 mentioned is listed a is make offer with $2.74 start and at normal 80% that's likely $2.19 each.

I did in my post above and quoted here. Also, eBay is not the whole market. additionally, many sellers of the basic 1869 do not track tagging.

The mentioned plate strip, likely the OP's not considered a valid pricing as it is the OP's guess.

Well rogdcam, the prices are much lower to draw you in, but when you pay you do not receive the item. But you can feel good that you found a "deal of a price."

I went ahead and listed it, so that is my listing. I put it high as a holder as I was trying to understand the "-". I kind of figured that it meant that there weren't enough transactions to gauge the value. I know how to search for listings, I was more trying to get a feel for how you who are more experienced than I decide on the value for something that has no reference point.

was not directed at you. It was a bit of frustration towards those who pick at the information given in the link as being inadequate because it is not actual sales price data even though they did no research of their own and after I post Ebay "sold" examples comes back and edits there post to show that they did some "work".

Glad we have a ballpark anyway and I learned something about these stamps in the process. Thank you!

You're obviously referring to my post and, yes, I did first post it without references, thought better of it and began looking for sold examples. I didn't see your followup post with the link to the same ebay lot before revising my own. Had to revise a couple of times as eBay's search returned some results that were not the correct item.
