Has anyone seen this type of cancelation on a western australia stamp before? Would like to know more about it? Thanks. (The stamp is not the correct color in the picture. It is blue gray.)

On the obliteration it's wrote :5 NO 19 06

NO is probably for November, 19, probably for 19th day, and 06, probably for 1906.

I don't know what would represent 5.
Most of Western Australia stamps from pre 1900s, I think, were obliterated with a special kind of obliteration, that I'll send you a picture soon. Because this stamp was obliterated after 1900, I think they changed the type of obliteration. That's just an hypothesis.

What exactly is an obliteration? Could this stamp have mailed been by ship since it says ship?

Paid -

This looks like a "SHIP MAIL ROOM" cancellation. See the "Postmarks of Western Australia" thread on page 8, with thanks to rod222.

Hope this helps you,

Obliteration is another word to say "cancellation"

Thanks Linus. I believe this is the only stamp sent by ship that I own. Reading the article about ship mail was very interesting and informative.

Sorry, obliteration is a french word, you can't say this in English !

I'll show you the classic cancellations of Western Australia that I told you.

Here are some examples of the cancellation that looks like a "grill" in my own collection.

I remarked that this cancellation was often used before 1900s in Western Australia
Sorry for bad image quality, I can't do better for now.
