I thought this article was worth sharing. It would seem that some areas have problems with mail being stolen from drop off boxes. I hope bringing attention to this can be a help to others to keep from having this happen to them.

Here is the link to the article.

Drop off boxes in my area ( Douglas county, Georgia ) were all removed several weeks ago because of security reasons

I was told earlier this year, by H&R Block (tax people), that any check one mails to the Internal Revenue service should just be taken directly to a Post office and handed to the clerk. Too many such checks are being pilfered apparently.

There was a rash of thefts from boxes in Toledo, Ohio also. Some from boxes at the main post office. Keys are being stolen from mail carriers so getting in the boxes is quite easy.

@txstamp. Some time back I took two fancy Easter cards to the post office to mail to my daughter and her best friend. Neither card has yet to arrive !
I am just saying - handing it to a clerk does not necessarily mean anything either

I was born quite a bit after many of you here on this forum and I can't remember ever using a drop off box. Even today I would never use one. I'd rather inconvenience myself to drive to the post office than use the drop box down the block. Sometimes I give mail straight to the mail person. Hopefully that's not a foolish mistake. What's funny is that at my post office there's two drop boxes right outside the door that you can drive up to and drop off your letters meanwhile there's plenty of parking and you could simply park your car walk 20 feet into the Post Office and securely drop your letter in the slot ("securely" at least)

We need to be careful where we mail from,
and we need to keep an eye on what we get delivered to our house, etc.
I just saw this today:

"In 2023, statistics show some 119 million package thefts occurred in the U.S., the equivalent of one out of every 200 deliveries, according to data compiled by Capital One. Americans lost some $13.4 billion to package theft last year, with the average stolen package worth around $112."

I would assume all carriers are included in these package thefts stats, not just the USPS.

Another article about theft from drop off boxes:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/othe...ngNewsSearch

This article details some of the large amounts of money being taken by stolen checks from these boxes.
More of the same crime from another area of the country. So sad!
