Here's an interesting story about a Canadian stamp dealer who is trying to get the USPS to issue a Taylor Swift stamp:

I don't like it if only because it would set a precedent of having living people on stamps. Harry Potter was ok because those were honoring the characters, not the actors themselves.

Given the absolute unprecedented deficits the US is currently at...
I disagree with any US stamp depicting any commercial entity unless the USPS makes bank on it. Why promote actors, film franchises, products, etc. unless the USPS gets a piece of the action? And if they are going to go down that road, NASA should also be selling ad space on sides of NASA rockets.

IMO no living person should appear on stamps except maybe Kings/Queens,
Presidents or rulers of a country, like the way it was before.
Most of the living people portrayed on stamps nowadays are entertainers or
sports figures and some of that didnt turn out too well.
Look at Canada's Buffy Sainte-Marie stamp issued in 2021.

Canada is actually one of the worst offenders when it comes to this nonsense.
Yet historical events and persons who actually had a large influence and
created Canada are totally pushed aside and ignored.

I think in this case, Miz Swift would be making money for the post office, rather than vice versa.

Maybe lighten up a bit. Of course, it will never happen because the US smartly doesn't put living persons on stamps. But the whole notion and proposal helps put the hobby in the spotlight, which is a good thing.

But, come to think of it - the US DID (in a way) honor several living people / current entertainers / sports stars with Stamps of the Century - including "Seinfeld" ... "Titanic" (James Cameron and the actors) ... "The Cosby Show" ... "All in the Family" ... Steelers Win Four Super Bowls ... New Baseball Records ... and some others ... also did Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, etc. ..

stamp program should be a balance, for sure ... Taylor Swift is a global sensation, a la Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles ... her concert performances add millions of dollars to local economies ... so perhaps she deserves a stamp of some sort

This is a great idea. Tayor Swift is awesome. I have seen her in concert and she would do wonders in introducing newbies to stamp collecting. Sign me up for a copy if USPS does it.

Chad already issued a stamp mentioned just for accuracy.

What I am waiting for is not a stamp, but a picture of her wearing a Travis Super Bowl ring on a chain around her neck. Then her same picture on the stamp would honor the Super Bowl, not a person. USPS should make money on that.

Some people use picture postage to make their own stamps.

Anything involving her (or any living person) should not deliberately happen ever. It would open up the biggest can of worms ever seen, and would cause no end of trouble.

If the USPS were to go down that rabbit hole then make it a semi-postal with the extra money going to charities.

The USPS has already pretty much gotten rid of the living person rule. How many more lighthouses do we really want to see on stamps? It would attract new people to collect stamps. Maybe even people younger than 50! I like the record album stamps of the UK and the Dr. Who ones too. Canada had a whole bunch of star trek stamps. I agree with typesetter about the semi-postal idea, but that would be a high bar to get through. I say go for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the "no living persons on stamps" policy primarily a U.S. restriction? Other countries have issued stamps commemorating living people, e.g., the recent Canadian stamp honoring Donald Sutherland. The British Commonwealth has a history of commemorating events in the life of the Queen, Charles & Diana, royal births, etc.

If Lower Punjabistan wants to issue a stamp commemorating Taylor Swift, more power to them.

Now if someone is lobbying the USPS or U.S. government for a special dispensation to standing policy for Taylor Swift, then they can eff off.

USPS originally had a 10 year waiting period with the exception of past presidents which were issued within the year after. Recently the timeline was reduced to a minimum of 1-year for extraordinary VIPs . This is AFTER DEATH!!
