Thanks for your informative first posts.

I have couple of queries though.

You mentioned that
Quote:
One fact is the 1207 was not the first stamp to be printed on the giori press. The first stamp was the 1193 4c stamp.

I believe that the first Giori printed stamp was Scott 1094 Old Glory
issued July 4, 1957

The Project Mercury Scott 1193 was issued on February 20, 1962
which was the same day that John Glenn orbited the Earth in his Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7.
I suppose the printing was done in secret since the Post Office wouldnt
have issued the stamp if the project had failed.

Hello Uknjay,
I'm very keen on contacting you as I have recently written an article on the first rotary printed booklet pane, Scott 583a, an issue which is still shrouded in a mystery. Within days of publication, I received a very interesting email with scans that might actually solve the mystery.

To shed light on it requires somebody with intimate knowledge of pressmen's work flow and procedures at the BEP. Though this booklet pane happened in the mid 1920s, my hope is the knowledge was still floating around in "BEPs pressmen's circles" for decades.

I tried to use the "email a member" button but it all it does is telling me "At 65 You are way too young to bother members" or "Everybody wants to see your questions". I doubt the latter (obviously also the former) as the questions are really way too technical for general interest (and quite frankly I don't want to give away the conclusions of a final article right from the start).

Maybe I have to up my post count high enough with random postings to get the email button working?

For safety reasons, all members must have 50+ post before they can use SCF's messaging system.

I stand corrected on the first stamp produced by the giori press. That sounds right to me as the press was bought around that time frame. I am so glad I joined as I have learned something. I look forward to having many discussions with the membership here. Two or more heads are better than one. I am sure by putting our head together we can figure out just about any thing in question.

I will gladly answer questions if I can. Please be advised they are some questions I am reframed from answering due to security concerns. I hope everyone understands. Other than the security concerns mentioned. I will do my best to answer in a manner that will be easy understandable. If for some reason it is not clear let me know and I will try my best to clarify my answer.

As to the rotary press. I own one myself. So I will be glad to share with anyone having a question.

Thank you for your response Uknjay.

Wow you have a rotary press.

Was it previous in use by the BEP?

Engraved press?

Goebel ?

I'm sure it's not this Giori/Koenig & Bauer. LOL

I only have a small one and older press single color. I do have a four unit Steven's off set press. The Steven's has the perferation and cutting tower and the rewind station if producing roll or cutter if producing sheets. I have a 9810 and a 9890 AB Dick small sheet feed presses as well. I use to print on the side for other print shops in the area. I have mostly retired from printing all together. The cost of printing on these older models you can not compete. I still screen print some posters and every now and then t-shirt or book bags for my church.

I do some lithography printing for some local artists. I will print some Engravings for the same artists. I done it so long for them I can not turn them down when they need something. They will not buy many mostly 100 to 500 prints. Then they sell them to their customer or in their gallery.

I have thought about making some first day covers in limited quantity. I even thought about printing a stamp album. Thought is all I ever did on the idea. I thought of engaging an local artist to design a first day cover. I do not have the customer base to even attempt anything like that.

Any chance you could show some pics of your printing presses?
Was your Steven's off set press used previously by the BEP to print
the offset portion on those Giori/offset combination printings?
