With the advent of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices take have cameras, we see some posts which have images upside down. This may be puzzling since they orientation on the device shows them correctly.

The issue is that hand held devices can be held in any orientation and users typically like to snap camera images quickly. So, hand held manufacturers decided to store the orientation information in the image metadata. The 'upside down' issue arises whenever other software applications and websites simply display the native image without reading the metadata orientation information. The result is an image displaying upside down.

The work around is easy. If the application or website is displaying the images upside down, turn your hand-held camera the other way when taking images. You can also use virtually any graphics application to rotate the images before uploading.

That must be the image orientation problem I had. I used my phone for a stamp image, that was rotated 90 deg on my computer view, and image editing program. I changed the orientation to right-side-up in the program and then uploaded the image to a post on SCF, and the posted image was rotated 90 deg! Tried to fix it to no avail. I guess I will need to rotate my phone to correct the image orientation and hope it shows up right-side-up on my computer! Thanks for the explanation!

One thing that also can happen is a cell phone photo that appears just fine on a PC after being resized, edited, etc, STILL displays wrong on the forum. In that case, I have had to basically copied and pasted the photo as an all-new image, saved as an all-new file. Yet another reason I prefer a real camera to a cell camera...
