What's The Word On A Revised Springer's Handbook?

Seems like there have been rumors for decades that the Springer's Handbook, covering taxpaid revenues, telegraph stamps, and other obscure philatelic material, would get a revised reissue. Maybe even in a compiled format, so collectors wouldn't have to consult various editions.

Does anyone know what became of this idea? I think the last edition was #10 in 1985. Are these in the public domain yet?

Written works don't reach the public domain in the US for something like 95 years, I think.

I wonder, though: maybe an arrangement can be made. Perhaps the owner/publisher would allow a group of volunteers to collate old editions into a new, print-on-demand version. The labor to put it together would be free, and set-up and proofs would be <$250. No inventory, and anyone who wanted a copy could just order one and get it in a few days…

I know the American Revenue Association is nearing the end of a lengthy and huge revision and expansion project to produce a greatly improved US revenue stamp catalog. It will make Springer (and some other revenue books) essentially obsolete. I do not know reliable details beyond this - and it should come from someone much closer to the project than myself anyway.

I know Eric has been working on an updated Springer catalog. Maybe he can weigh in on the details.

No idea where you got that information, but the ARA is not near the end of anything of the sort, nor are we working on it. There is a private group that has been working on a revised Springer for years now, but I don't know anything about the time line, nor what all will be included. I'd think Eric might know.

Ok, I'll stand corrected on the ARA part, but I do know some collectors who are actively working on sections and I have contributed some data through them.

It's been "coming soon" for several years now........

The new Springer Catalog is progressing. It is a huge undertaking, but when it finally becomes available I believe you be pleased. It is currently more than 450 pages with hundreds of color illustrations covering all U.S. Taxpaids, Special Tax Stamps, Customs Stamps and Dept. of Agriculture stamps.

Hopefully it will also be available in digital format.
