I mentioned S&H Green Stamps in a group discussion today and all of the 20-somethings looked at me like I had two heads.
I can still remember getting a sticky tongue from licking and sticking after my Mom went grocery shopping on double stamp Wednesday at Piggly Wiggly.
Does anyone else remember them?

I sure do...we also had Plaid Stamps.. The gas stations would have double stamps on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
They raised the price of gas by 2 cents, but the prices in those days was only 29.9 cents a gallon |

Swabbie You want to talk about sticky tounges? My mom would wait for the double stamp night and do the shopping for the month all at once, for a family of 14! She got some great stuff with those stamps. I still have the Remington Model 514 .22 cal rifle that she bought for my oldest brother with green stamps.

I don't have any direct experience with them, I'm too young. But I do know what they are and how they were used. I do have some gas ration stamps somewhere. I've been going to antique stores on my own since I was 16, what can I say I like old stuff. I am one strange dude. |

Oh boy, it was great to clean out that kitchen drawer and head down to the little S&H store to cash in. Probally still have a few books someplace. Used to be the old a&P market where we got ours in upstate N.Y.. Also the checkers had a real coffe mill at each register when you checked out. |

Oh yeah...I remember them well plus the swell smells at the old A&P. And the less interesting or more 'sophisticated' "National Tea". We were just talking the other day about the fact that we don't have a green grocer anymore where you could just pop in and get a piece of fruit for lunch or whatever. |

Oh, yeah, that really brings back some memories. Also Big Bonus, Top Value... to add on to those previously mentioned. Some people still collect those, by the way! Also, something most people don't know -- you can STILL redeem the S&H green stamps! So if got a whole bunch and need a new toaster or clock (or whatever they offer nowadays)... http://www.greenpoints.comSee, we're not THAT old, yet! The young'ns just don't know everything! k |

Ah, trading stamps...
Gawd, I hated those things, for all the reasons already mentioned. I don't think we ever did redeem the ones we had. |

We still have several items, in the kitchen specifically, trays and serving platters and such that were S&H Greenies. I, fortunately or un fortunately worked right across the street from one of their redemption centers in Stamford,CT. I often got "Honey, if you're not busy at lunch" bit. I remember we got a "Roto-Broil 400" from them. How many of you remember that cooking monstrosity? Allan |

My brother and I finally got smart and used a moist wash cloth to "lick" the stamps.
