Kars Castle (Kars Kalesi)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_of_Kars

Quote:
The Castle of Kars (Turkish: Kars Kalesi) is a former fortification located in Kars, Turkey. It is also known under the name Iç Kale ("Central/Inner Castle", "Citadel").

It was built in 1153 by Vizier Firuz Akay commissioned by Saltuk Sultan Malik Izzeddin Saltuk II. The outer walls surrounding the city were built in the 12th century. The castle, which was destroyed by Timur in 1386, was rebuilt again in 1579 by Lala Mustafa Pasha, who came to Kars ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Murat III.

It is said in the Ottoman sources that the castle was rebuilt with the help of one hundred thousand soldiers and workers. In 1606, the castle was destroyed by the Iranian Shah Abbas I, and in 1616 and in 1636 it was restored twice and new elements were added to it. The castle was hugely damaged after the occupation of the Russians after the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, and partially changed after 40 years of occupation. The walls of the Castle of Kars were made of basalt masonry.

Nuremberg Castle (Burg) is a group of medieval fortified buildings on a sandstone ridge dominating the historical center of Nuremberg in Bavaria. The castle, together with the city walls, is considered to be one of Europe's most formidable medieval fortifications. It represented the power and importance of the Holy Roman Empire and the outstanding role of the Imperial City of Nuremberg. The Sinwell Tower survived the 2nd WW; the photograph shows the wooden staircase inside. The tower is in the center background in the older stamp.

The Löwenburg ("Lion's castle"), located picturesquely in the Bergpark ("mountain park") Wilhelmshöhe, presents itself as a romantic knight's castle from the Middle Ages. However, it was only built to look like one at the end of the 18th century. Inside it is Baroque in style and houses an impressive museum of arms much older than the castle itself. The old drawing shows the castle keep which did not survive the 2nd WW.

(PS: And to make the castle even a little more 'fake', the huge tree seen almost dwarfing the tower is indeed a California sequoia; it was quite popular some 100+ years ago to import seeds and seedlings for castle grounds and parks; there are several right here in town! K.)

(Kris Rascher: Many modern buildings in earthquake-prone regions of the world, such as Torre Latinoamericana, Taipei 101, The Transamerica Pyramid, Shanghai Tower, Mori Tower, New Wilshire Grand Center, and Sabiha Gökçen Airport, adapt earthquake-resistant design.)

Sanssouci was the summer palace of Frederick the Great, in Potsdam, near Berlin. It is often counted among the German rivals of Versailles. Sanssouci is in the more intimate Rococo style and is far smaller than its French Baroque counterpart. The palace was built 1745 and 1747 to fulfill Frederick's need for a private residence where he could relax away from the pomp and ceremony of the Berlin court. 'Sans Souci' might translate to 'without concerns'. In the older stamp of 1986 the king is playing his flute in the music room, shown in the photograph. The terraced gardens are vinyards. Sanssouci and its gardens became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

Sanssouci was also illustrated on two stamps of the former DDR, or East Germany (1983 and 1990). Today it is part of the UNESCO world heritage site "Prussian Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin".

The Summer Palace of Sanssouci was also shown on ATM stamps in 1993. One could enter the postage as needed: variable value stamps (at that time still Pfennig and D-Mark.

The former Reichstag building, now German Bundestag is an historic edifice in Berlin, constructed to house the Imperial Diet of the German Empire. It was opened in 1894 and housed the Diet until 1933, when it was severely damaged by fire. Almost completely destroyed in WWII, as seen in the Russian stamp for the 50th anniversary of the end of the war, the building fell into disuse.

In 1956, the West German government decided that the Reichstag should not be torn down, but be restored instead. The architect Paul Baumgarten reconstructed the building from 1961 to 1964. He created a plain building inside the historic Reichstag, retaining only the outer walls stripped of most of their statues and decoration, as seen in the two stamps of west Germany (1964 and 1986 Berlin). The official German reunification ceremony on the 3rd of October 1990, was held at the Reichstag. In 1995 Christo wrapped the entire building!

After reunification, the German parliament or Bundestag, voted to return to the old building in Berlin. It was thoroughly renovated and received a new transparent dome in its middle; architects Gottfried Böhm/Norman Foster. There is a spiral path within the dome leading all the way up and down again. The Bundestag moved in in 1999. After voting today, (24th September, 2017) there may be changes in the political landscape of the Bundestag.
