Dna, The Double-Helix, Genes & Genetics

This 2001 issue from Macau featuring the 4 nucleotides that build up the double-helical DNA hailed a new genomic era with promises to new medical discoveries and therapeutical inroads for a multitude of diseases. The nucleotides featured by the se-tenant block of 4 stamps are guanine, cytosine, adenine and thymine, represented by the letters G, C, A and T, respectively in gene sequences. The miniature sheet shows how the 4 nucleotides are chemically linked to each other in the now famous double helical DNA. Scott 1076 & 1077.

This 1969 Spanish stamp was issued for the 6th European Congress of Biochemistry in Madrid. It features the DNA double helix and the genetic coding table that interprets how triplets of nucleotides code the 20 amino acids that form the basis of all organic life on earth. Scott 1566.

This stamp issued in Lichtenstein in 1969 is the earliest use, that I know, of the double helix as a symbol of science on a stamp, here it represents specifically biology. Since 2001, the very same symbol has often been used to represent science in stamp designs. Scott 454.

I'm no science major and most of this presentation is over my head, but for for those interested in chemistry and stamps, here's quite an impressive presentation that someone took quite awhile to create.
