Let's see images of your stamps depicting great apes (i.e., gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees). But please, no monkeying around! Lesser primates may use the tradesman's entrance. - nethryk Here are images of three stamps to get this thread started: Gorilla, designed and engraved by Gilbert Aufschneider, and issued by Gabon on July 15, 1964, Scott No. 173, SG No. . Young orangutan, engraved and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., Ltd., and issued for use in Sarawak on October 1, 1957, Scott No. 198, SG No. 189. Chimpanzee, official overprinted stamp engraved and printed by Perkins Bacon & Co., and issued by Liberia in 1906, Scott No. O48, SG No. O57.

Excellent examples, everyone. Thanks! rod222 - Although I specifically requested no monkey business, upon further reflection I suppose that we might as well include other primates, as otherwise I suspect this thread will probably be quite short. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a distinguished-looking chimpanzee, designed and engraved by Georges Bétemps, and issued for use in French West Africa on May 2, 1955 to promote the protection of wildlife, Scott No. 62, SG No. 70. - nethryk |

Here is an image of a stamp depicting a king colobus ( Colobus polykomos), also known as the western black-and-white colobus, designed and engraved by Jacques Combet, and issued by Ivory Coast on September 14, 1963 to publicize the Réserve de Bouna (which is now called the Comoé National Park), Scott No. 210. - nethryk |

I collect stamps with monkeys and apes on them - that is, with real primate species depicted, not cartoon or circus monkeys. It often surprises fellow stamp collectors that the number of stamps with primates on them is fast approaching 2000; the first stamps is a 1906 stamp from Liberia (SG226) with a chimpanzee on it (shown modified in an earlier post, above). There has been an upsurge in numbers with many countries now issuing Chines Year of the Monkey stamps (next Year of the Monkey, 2016) and also many issues dealing with endangered species. In an analysis of species depeicted, the latter also shows in a trend away from the most frequently depicted species until the end of the last centuries (chimpanzees and gorillas) to other species, lesser known, and even endangered subspecies. If someone else collects monkeys, I would like to hear from them! I have catalogued my entire collection which I think is fairly comprehensive but as we all know, there's always another one. I also collect FDCs and maxicards, and to make the albums more interesting, have added some old postcards (eg, from Gibraltar, with monkeys) and phonecards. I do not collect errors but if I can afford them, add some proof sheets or presentation packs. Anyone there? I'll try and upload one of the newer issues, from Peru, 2011, with rarer species and subspecies. This is my first post so don't laugh.... happy collecting, Cobie |

Interesting souvenir sheet. I was born and grew up on the Ucayali River which joins the Maranon at Nauta, Peru to form the Amazon. Had a couple of pet monkeys while I was young. I don't mean to horrify you when I say that wild monkey is good eating when your protean mostly comes from fish out of the Ucayali. |

cobie - Welcome to SCF! I had no idea that so many stamps depicting primates have been issued. Does that number include lemurs? There are images of some lemur stamps in the SCF small animals thread. yarina - Your childhood sounds fascinating. What does monkey meat taste like? Please don't say "just like chicken." Here are images of a couple of stamps depicting primates, a mountain gorilla and a black-and-white colobus monkey, designed by Belgian artist Jean Van Noten (1903-1982), printed by photogravure (Courvoisier S.A.), and issued for use in Ruanda-Urundi on October 15, 1959, Scott Nos. 137 & 139, SG Nos. 192 & 194. - nethryk |

Hello everyone: Thank you for your replies and words of welcome to the group - Yarina, your background is fascinating. Monkeys are often part of the diet and I have no problem with that where, as you say, a monkey (especially the larger species) provide essential protein to local inhabitants and landowners. Where it becomes a problem is when hunting for bushmeat as a profitable business threatens the very survival of the "golden goose" species. All the same, I would not blame a poor person for killing and selling bushmeat of a rare species if otherwsie his family would perish; rather, rich people who smuggle this meat into their Western world as a luxury. But that is another story, and not for this forum.
In answer to another qustion: yes, my collection includes lemurs, everything from tarsiers up the evolutionary tree. I got into monkey collecting though an interest in primates developed though my work as a medical researcher, trying to learn more about them so as to provide them with the best of care in captivity according to their natural behaviours and needs. I started collecting books and a collection of monkey figurines and statuettes, trying to bring one back from any country I visited. Then one day my parents gave me a sheetlet from Equatorial Guinea (1975), with 16 different monkey species illustrated (pciture follows) and that was the start. Rather a slow one since I had moved to Australia and dealers there had few topical stamps, mostly Commonwealth and of course Australia so for me, as I am sure for many, the development of the internet and eBay and other sites was a gift! Love to hear more from you all - even if I cannot contact anyone through this forum by e-mail post you interest in monkey stamps here, love to learn more. Cobie
