Quote: fifia - You are a veritable poet of the romance of philately! Merry Christmas to you, too....Mr.nethryk! The origin of the Olympic Games of antiquity was probably in the 2nd millennium BC The first regular games have taken place in the Greek Olympia in 776 BC. The Olympic Games of antiquity were banned in the year 394 by the Roman Emperor Theodosius I because of the worship of pagan gods. The first Olympics of the modern era were held in Athens in April 1896. 100 years later the Olympics were held in Atlanta, GA where I was the coordinator for customer activities for Siemens Automotive. Great memories... Looks likea competition with the Australien stamp from tomiseksj! web photo |

L' Hirondelle I (the Swallow) was a 200-ton schooner purchased in 1873 by Albert I, Prince of Monaco (1848-1922), and fitted out as a marine research vessel for his oceanographic studies. Here is an image of a stamp depicting l' Hirondelle I in 1870, designed by Raoul Serres, engraved by Charles-Paul Dufresne, and issued by Monaco on March 3, 1949, Scott No. 237, SG No. 375 - nethryk |

On either side of this Dominican Republic stamp are sailing vessels.. 1902 Scott 144a 1c dark green & black "Francisco Sanchez" Note the lovely portrait of a sailing vessel under the "1502" date? Then note the more modern ship under the "1902" date? Interestingly, the modern ship is still equipped with sails. And the older sailing vessel-a Caravel?..has oars on either side? Can any SCF sailing ship expert tell me more about what kind of sailing vessel is portrayed? Oh, and BTW, the stamp vignette is inverted. More info... Francisco Sanchez was one of the three hero-patriots of the Dominican Independence (from Haiti) movement in 1844. When Duarte was exiled, Sanchez was the voice of the rebellion. The Son of Afro-Dominican parents, he was a man of action, but also taught himself Latin and French. He was exiled by General Santana for four years, but then returned. When he objected to Santana returning the Dominican Republic to Spain as a colony in 1861, he was executed. |

Cjd - I think you have it right. La Girona, a galleass of the 1588 Spanish Armada The galleass, larger and heavier than galleys had up to 32 oars, each worked by as many as 5 men. Galleasses also had more sails than galleys. They were intermediate between a galley and a true man-of-war. Also, in the 15th century, a light type of galleass (called a Frigate) was built by southern European countries to combat the fast galleys of the north African Barbary pirates. Now whether these galleasses where found circa ~1502 sailing near the Dominican Republic lands as the stamp depicts, I cannot say. |
