We've seen art on stamps in the form of paintings, but what about statues? Anyone have any nice sculptural postage? Here's a couple to start off. And of course...

Here is an image of an airmail semi-postal stamp depicting "Maternité de Antaïsaka," a sculpture by French artist Anna Quinquaud (1890-1984), engraved by Raoul Serres, and issued by the Vichy government in France on June 6, 1942, but never placed on sale in Madagascar (Malagasy), Scott No. CB2. - nethryk |

Here is an image of a stamp designed after a detail from a Hellenic bronze statue, L'Éphèbe d'Agde, dating from the 4th century BC. This statue was found in 1964 in the bed of the Hérault river, opposite the Cathedral Saint-Etienne d'Agde in southern France. It evokes the style of the sculptor Lysippos of Sicyon, and may be a portrait of Alexander the Great. This stamp was engraved by Czeslaw Slania, and issued by France on May 15, 1982, Scott No. 1830, Y&T No. 2210. - nethryk |

Vittorio Bottego (1860-1897) was an Italian army officer and one of the first Western explorers of Jubaland in the Horn of Africa (now part of Somalia), where he led two expeditions. Here is an image of a stamp designed after a bronze statue of Bottego created by Italian sculptor Ettore Ximenes (1855-1926), a personal friend of Bottego. For me, the figure's rather nonchalant pose not only conveys Bottego's undoubted courage, but also a certain degree of insouciance. This monument was dedicated in Parma, Bottego's birthplace, in 1907.The stamp was engraved by Vittorio Nicastro, and issued by Italy on July 23, 1960, the centenary of Bottego's birth, Scott No. 808. - nethryk |

Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Albrecht von Graefe was a pioneering German ophthalmologist. Here is an image of a stamp designed after a statue of Graefe (1882) by German sculptor Rudolph Siemering (1835-1905), engraved by Hans-Joachim Fuchs, and issued by West Germany (Berlin) on May 22, 1978, Scott No. 9N417, Michel No. 569, plus a photo of the Graefe Memorial at the Charité medical school, Berlin. - nethryk |

Two statues by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - 1564) The Creation of Adam on the 14k and The Last Judgment on the 30k Russia Scott 4301a Apparently one of the Popes who fittingly called himself Innocent X disliked the appearance of the male genitalia so much that he had all the nude statues covered with fig leaves. Actually Litho those are paintings (frescos) by Michelangelo from the Sistine Chapel. The creation is from the ceiling and the Last Judgement is from an above the alter. But let's face it, his skill with a brush and his use of light and shadow certainly have the dimensionality of sculpture. Lovely sheet.
