LaoPhil, those engraved Japanese look really great. Thanks for the sharp scans. Back in 1964 I read in Linn's Weekly Stamp News about the new Tokyo Olympic stamps being issued including the souvenir sheet and I wanted them. I decided to place an order at the Japan Post Philatelic Bureau for the sheet and other commems they had on hand. Wow that was 60 years ago. Seems like yesterday. The quality of Japanese photogravure stamps by the mid sixties was excellent especially their multicolour printings. IMO they were almost the equal of Courvoisier and Harrison and Sons. Laos Summer Olympic Games Stamps
Starting in 1968 until today, Laos issued thirteen sets publicizing the summer Olympic Games. Today, the first day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, I would like to start a new series of posts shows all Laos summer Olympic Games stamps. I will post them by order of date of issue. Sorry in advance if I already posted two or three sets in this thread or other threads.

What a mixture. Games, events and winners appear to be mixed at will.
Was basketball even an event at London 1908 or only a demonstration sport in 1904 and 1924?
Was volleyball even recognised as a (non-Olympic) sport by the IOC before 1909, and played at the Olympics before 1964?
Diving at the 1896 Athens Olympics? |

Diving at the 1896 Athens Olympics? Well, I don't think there is a connection between the sport field shown on the stamp and the Gold medal depicted. This stamps were designed and printed in Cuba which, in those years, produced many stamps for many countries and not always they took care about the stamp designs and their meaning, in addition to many design mistakes you can find on many stamps. |
