Sometimes the term "philatelic" when attached to covers is somewhat or completely derogatory, being a synonym for "contrived". I think these types of postal history are some of the most entertaining and they bring a smile to my face. Perhaps it is crazy but I would love to see a competition exhibit with such things as the subject matter (maybe it has been done?).

Covers such as this one were certainly "contrived", but that does not mean that they can't be fun. They have always been collected, so a lot of collectors over the years clearly also have had fun with them.

What I was fascinated by was the number of groups involved creating this cover. Thinking back I would think they had some kind of plan or back ground story for this event. I am surprised there is no record of it. Especially since two groups are still active.

The national stamp show was in NYC in May of that year, the people involved might well have gotten together there and come up with the idea at that time. They then created it over the next 2 months, and so we have the cover.

here is some additional info and image attached from the AFDCS:

In my collection, I have an identical FDC cancelled in Walla Walla, WA. My FDC also has the rubber-stamped cachet that was used only in Walla Walla. I also have had no luck in obtaining more information about the cover. I was told that my FDC probably is one-of-a-kind. I would surmise that there may have been only one FDC serviced at each of the five first day cities for the issue. On my FDC, the cachet is pasted on. The FDC was flown from Selfridge, MI to Walla Walla where the new stamp was affixed and cancelled. The auxiliary markings are the same as on your FDC.
