Czeslaw Slania was well-known for his series of 23 labels featuring heavyweight boxing champions between 1889 and 1964. But he also did a similar series of engraved labels for actresses in the 1950s and 60s. I know of a few: Doris Day, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren. How many of these did he create? And what was the significance of the year on each label?

The latin phrase under the person's name translates as "the greatest star of the year...."
Maybe there was a list naming these ladies as the greatest stars of the indicated yaers?

You're missing the 1957 Sophia Loren, and the 1962 Marilyn Monroe. If there was a 1960, I haven't seen it.

There are many more of those Slania "labels".
Here's your favourite one as an example:

A Polish guy has desperately been trying to sell these on European ebays. At $300 to $400 a pop, he just doesn't seem to get any takers. I wonder why.....

then again, boxers seem to be out of fashion:

As this one only shows up at $8.....

Are there more actresses beyond '57, '58, '59, '61 and '62? Even if there aren't images, names would help me search.

A member of our local society had a pretty good Slania collection, and I would pick up cinderellas and other ancillary material for him when I would run across it.

Very helpful, thank you! I didn't realize he also engraved a number of labels for world leaders. These seem to be far scarcer than the boxers or the actresses. Here's one that is not listed on that site.

I was very fortunate to meet Slania in 1992 at the Columbian Stamp show in Chicago. The Czeslaw Slania Study Group held a meeting and the master attended.

When he was asked about these engravings - the boxers and actresses pictured above - his eyes lit up. He seemed extremely proud of these. Here is another piece that I purchased from him that day along with a group photo from the meeting. I'm seated second from the left. Are any other forum members in this picture?
