"Oddity" but with no additional value for being an oddity, rather due to the nature of the precancel, the value decreases from that of a clearly and cleanly canceled stamp.
I doubt this is a precancel, but rather a portion of a common-style registry cancel of the era. Also the letter rate of 2 cents plus the 8 cent registry fee during the lifetime of this stamp was frequently paid with a 10 cent stamp *and* given a magenta registry cancel. Orientation: Just as stamps can be applied at any angle on a mailpiece, so too can cancels. Nothing unusual or valuable. Unfortunately, the condition of the stamp is poor.
