This stamp appears to have a December 16, 79 cancel. Of course it was issued in 1897. Could this be a cancel with a mistaken year?

Maybe an inverted "97"? Like 79 instead of 97?

Precisely, an indicia error... these date kits were assembled by hand. Cool item.

That is neat.

Not to be pedantic, but it is probably worth mentioning that the date slugs can also be inserted "upside down" (depending on the device), which gets us "inverted" date slugs. Slugs inserted in the wrong order probably get us "transposed" date slugs. Maybe someone will happen along with a better term for the transposed slugs.
