Well, then the SS that started this thread would probably be a definitive. Off to finish my Ukrainian stamp album 20004 supplement! Thanks for the feedback!

Your Ukranian S/S is #F2c in the Scott catalog. Very nice S/S to have!

I can't figure out all the inscriptions on the S/S, so I don't know if it was issued to commemorate anything.

The translation on the top is "Fifth and Sixth Release of standard (definitive) Ukrainian Postage Stamps."

Well then I would consider it a definitive.

Again, a very nice miniature sheet! And decent catalog value, too.

I agree with khj that' it's a definitive item but not with the terminology.
However, this maybe due to the different names used in the USA compared to other countries...and vice-versa.

I would call the Ukraine item a Sheetlet of Definitives.
So too the Canada item.
The item from Marshall Islands is a commemorative sheet and the stamps are also Commemoratives.
The Souvenir sheets shown by Cal and myself are Commemorative but with Definitive stamps.

Just my 10 cents worth !

*** Adding to a twelve-year old thread ***

By resolution of 11 May 1993, nr. 13026, Spain introduced a new design for the "serie básica" with the image of King Juan Carlos I.

The first issue included a 'bloque' (block) of the four stamps, separated by a double tab in reference to the issue. The print run of stamps to be produced in sheets of 100 was unlimited. That of the 'blocks' was limited to 2,000,000 produced in sheets of 25 blocks of six labels.

Clearly identified as part of the "Emisiones básicas año 93," they are not souvenir sheets but miniature sheets or blocks.

Four further stamps were issued in 1994. After the final instalment of the year, another miniature sheet was issued.

In both January and July 1995, two further stamps were issued. As in the preceding years, the four stamps were issued in a miniature sheet.

In 1997, four further stamps were issued in two instalments. However, no further miniature sheets were issued.

One stamp from this definitive set was issued later, so it is not possible to collect it within a souvenir sheet format.

I got this Canada Insects S/S on a mailing from Canada around 2013 or so.

Not just definitives, but low-face-value ones too. And, not even the whole set.

A very nice Canada item!

@mastodon, I think Canada Post now issues miniature sheets of new definitive stamps as a common practice. I suspect this is because modern definitives are regularly issued in self-adhesive booklets and coils only. So collectors can get a nice single of each new stamp via the miniature sheet rather than buying a booklet of 10 stamps.

Since rate changes often mean a change to domestic, USA and International mail, the cost of several booklets adds up quickly. Much cheaper to get a miniature sheet with one of each rate included.

Of course, the catalogues count them as separate issues with different catalogue numbers, so the completists need one of each format anyway! #128514;

MadBaker:

Your explanation totally makes sense! I think it's just really nice that Canada offered a souvenir sheet for only 15c! That's a great way to attract young people to the hobby--if they don't have much cash, a little pocket change can buy S/S like this one--and the subject matter is interesting, too :-}

I like S/S, but I ALSO need the singles in my album as well--so they got me right where they want me :-}

Ha!!
