My Minkus Supreme album has a page for 19 stamps labeled as "Katanga - Albertville Occupation" from 1961 (see photo).

I'm unable to find these stamps in the Scott Catalogue. Even though they're numbered on my Minkus album page, I can't find them in an old Minkus catalog.

Can anyone point to a listing for me?

Only a guess here- Katanga ceased to exist in 1961. Perhaps these were local issues of the Congo Rep re-occupying the region that had been part of Katanga. Since they are listed by Minkus, I would hope there is more info in that catalog.

Google AI mentions a rebel occupation of Albertville, however the dates given were in 1964.

Thanks Vayolene for the useful web page.

I stand corrected - the reference on the album page to 1961 means the original stamp issues that later were overprinted are from 1961. They should have also mentioned the year of overprinting. This issue makes me think of the German locals that were issued at the close of WWII. Some seem to be listed, others not.

Minkus Katanga Occupation stamps #1-14 are listed in the 1980 Minkus Vol-1 Part-2 catalog. It is stated "November 1961, Albertville Provisionals; Katanga #59-72 (March 1, 1961) hand-stamped CONGO by National Congolese Army after occupation of Albertville and prior to arrival of regular Congolese stamps March 24, 1962". Catalog value is listed as $50.00, mint or used. This catalog does not list #15-19.

Minkus must have added these to their catalog after 1975/1976 (the date of my Minkus catalog). The pages were part of their 1986 supplement for the Supreme/Master albums. I'm not sure how I'll ever fill these spaces.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Katanga was a Belgian province turned country, turned province again. Katanga was one of the four large provinces created in the Belgian Congo in 1914. In 1960 it tried its hand at self-rule/independence, by 1962 it was absorbed by the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was then split into the Tanganyika, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba, and Haut-Katanga provinces. Between 1971 and 1997 (during the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko when Congo was known as Zaire), its official name then was Shaba Province, I believe it still is. Just some added FYI for you.

Scott does have them listed under Katanga as #40-47 for the Independence of Congo Republic set, and the Katangan Wood Carvings set is #52-64. You don't have all of them picutred that I gave you numbers for. I'm sure you'll find them and figure out which Number goes to what. Happy hunting.
