Can anyone provide any info on this what appears to be a German revenue stamp (Stempel)? I'm reasonably fluent in German but have never heard the term 'Scheck' before. It looks like the straightline cancel on the stamp reads 1914 or thereabouts.

In this part of the world, we tend to use the French 'cheque' for 'check' and it is pronounced "scheck" on the continent.

Scheck is the German spelling of the word. It is a stamp duty label applied to cheques.

Reverting back to my European roots, I started using 'cheque' for 'check' years ago but never made the connection with this revenue stamp. Now that you mention it, I recall my father using the word 'scheck' back when he was still around (we spoke mostly German at home) but that term had been buried deep inside my memory banks. Oddly, Google Translate was of no help when I ran the term thru that platform. At any rate, thank you for the education (and the memories)!

The free Duden site will drive you mad with advertisements, but Duden is a big name when it comes to spelling and provides meaning of the words. It may be helpful from time to time.
