Rotary printings will almost always result in a stamp that is taller or wider than the same design from a flat press (to fit on the rotary cylinder, the plate invariably gets stretched a bit).
Mint examples can usually be told by the gum breakers as well, which only rotary stamps have. However that is not very helpful for some of the earliest rotary stamps.
