I've lusted after this particular stock certificate design for years, but I wanted an early example with (1) an imperforate revenue stamp, and (2) a handstamped cancel.

There are flashier certificates out there, but I've always loved the imagery on this design.

Not cheap, but gorgeous.

Another reason to trim a stamp tightly; no real place left for a stamp and who would have wanted to cover any of that beautiful design?

That is amazing. The engravers back then had incredible talent!

An absolute gem.

Any background/history on the company? Lots of German-based insurers in the 19th Century, so would this just be a name to instill confidence or was it a company with real German roots?

Outstanding engraving and all of the different old font styles are just beautiful!
I'm wanting to print this out and frame it

What steps will you now take to preserve this piece of stock history?

Oh my! Why have I never heard of this certificate before -- that is stunning!

I immediately grabbed my copy of "The Engraver's Line" and looked up the printer, Hosford and Co. of New York. And found ... nothing. That is a real mystery. But I'm assuming this is engraved -- perhaps it is lithographed. Can you feel raised ink by lightly running your fingernail over it?

Odd that they would take such a detailed engraving and print it lithographically. They did a great job, though!
