Hi Rod, I should have clarified. I was looking at the locals when I wrote the post. Antwerp does start at 1909, but Brussels starts at 1906, goes through 1914, then picks up again at 1922. I have an 1899 and two 1921 for Brussels and so was wondering why Steiner didn't have pages for those years since I doubt what I have are rare. He does include a couple pages for random precancels that I can use. I'm just glad he has pages for most of what I have... 100+ of these through 1964.

OK Nicholas,
we need a Belgium specialist to answer those,
why does the Catalogue start at 1906?

Would be nice to hear how they were used too.

My earlies.

Very nice pics, Rod. I'm still in the process of printing out pages and laying out the stamps. Just started doing Belgium this week and have laid out pages for regular issues through Scott #197, plus the pre-cancels since I had so many of them. I have all the other issues through 1940 sorted and catalogued and I have all of the BOB items sorted as well. So many stamps, so little time. Hoping to hear from a Belgium expert as to why the precancel catalogue starts in 1906.

I could be wrong, but it Looks like the typo. precancels started in 1906. The handstamped (roller precancels) ones started in 1894 and continued into the late 1930s. Guess I need to figure out how to tell the difference. I think the obvious roller precancels are those before 1906 and the ones that have parts of two cancels on the same stamp.

Nicholas
the best "go to" article for these are in an paper called
"Some things worth knowing concerning the Belgian handtype precancelled stamps"
The precancel Stamp society
Webmaster Michael Hynes

It has a most detailed account, alas, it is copyrighted, I cannot forward, but you may search for it
(I could not find it again)

It had details as obscure as the roulette roller, was not in fact a cylinder, but a pentahedral prism, (with flattered edges)

I'll leave you to do the searching, please post if you find it.

I did find an email from my mentor Jay Carrigan, confirming the early handstamps are not included in the Catalogus.

I did see on delcampe a new release of the Belgium Precancel Catalogue, I've yet to find the details.

Rod, I searched and searched without success. I did find a precancels.com site which might have this paper you mentioned. I found a reference to literature by Michael Hynes, but the site takes me to a dead end. At https://www.precancels.com/links/ down in the page there is a link to the Michael Hynes site that failed (it is called precanceled.com and the implication is that site is no longer in use). Not sure how much more digging I will do on these as I only have a handful of the roller type and I just finished mounting the 160+ precancels I have. These will just go into the binder behind the other Belgium pages. Thanks for all of your help!
