Hi, I got these stamps from Costa Rica from around 1907. They have five precancel bars, and one of them also says 'Habilitado'. What does this do to the value of the stamps?
This website mentions remnant stock of old stamps were sold at auction. After the auction stocks were invalidated by five horizontal bars. Most stamps invalidated this way are worth less than normal stamps. Some rare ones can be worth more.
Scott notes these as remainder cancels, from a large group sold off long ago at a large discount. A few are very scarce but likely only of interest to a specialist, otherwise most are of minimal value.
"Habilitado" overprints are a later separate issue. It means that older and probably obsolete stamps were again usable as postage when so overprinted.
