Is There Anything Notable About This Check Dated Sep 6, 1930 Other Than It's Age?

Hello,

I am very surprised to find this sub-forum on checks and such. I recently was given this check to see what I could do with it. Frankly, I don't know a thing about checks other than how to write one, and I don't do that any more either since the arrival of plastic on the scene. Here is the check:

I hope you don't mind that I am posting it here, not exactly sure what kind of information is to be posted in this forum? Anyway, any information or observations about this check that you may have would be very much appreciated. It does seem kind of strange, it looks almost like it was written in pencil. The amount is $21.20 - and sometime during the cancellation process they punched holes into the check, not sure why they did that in 1930?

Hi Rod, Thank you so much for posting information on this check, I am thinking now maybe I shouldn't have put it up, but I do not know about collecting checks and those types of papers - did not have any clue as to whether there was anything of interest on this check, apparently the only interesting thing about it is the bank that honored the check - it is kind of strange, I have driven past that bank building well over a thousand times, did not know what it was, now I do and I don't live in that area any more. What they have done to that bank looks too upscale for me, not my cup o tea. Anyway, I am thinking now that it is because of the bank the check was drawn on is the reason that this check is still in existence. Thank you Rod, for looking into it - I feel sort of silly that I didn't google things like the bank name before posting the check, thank you, Julie

Julie,
good idea to ditch that feeling of asking questions.
We get nowhere without them.

Ask away!

I recall in a Canadian context, we solved the existance of wax crayons on stamps via the exposure of stamps on cheques.

The punching was done to make it obvious the check was paid and invalidated. Done by the receiving bank, and very common back in the day. You might remember the handstamps on the back of checks done for the same reason, back when they returned the actual checks to you.

Very cool Julie, I love old things like that. The writing styles alone are so interesting. And that you have even seen the bank it came from, amazed the bank is still up and running.
Thanks for sharing :)

Hi Barbara, it is nice to hear from you again. As Rod22 pointed out in his post above, the bank is not up and running as a bank, it has been converted to a pie shop and ice cream shop, which I would have never set foot in anyway if I were still living in the area - here is a picture of what it looks like from an old postcard:

The Bank of Guerneville building is the large building on the left - the town of Guerneville still looks pretty much the same as shown in this old postcard except for all of the older vehicles parked on the street (Main Street) - the town of Guerneville is on the Russian River and to get anywhere on the river (up or down stream) everyone on the river must follow the same road through town. Julie :)

Nice that the building is still standing, even if it is a sweets shop now. Still a great story!

I would keep it well away from my stamps, that level of foxing, it's surprising it doesn't have a pack of hounds after it. :-)
