Stamp Mounting Strategies

Are there any suggestions for mounting stamps (WW)in an album other than using date of issue or scott numbers as a base? Consider that the stamps in question will be sorted as to country.

Are you using preprinted pages or blank pages? If blank you can arrange them however you like, filling them up as you go. You could arrange by topic, denomination, color, size, shape. Well you get the idea.

Just as an example, my homemade album for my GB Machins, is order of denomination. First the pre-decimals, then the decimals from 1/2 p on up to 3pounds, and then the NVIs.

There is no order here on the basis of a catalog number or year, except within each denomination group.

Not sure this helps you since a Machin collection is pretty specialized.

I was thinking of building a good supply for a country in a stock book and then putting them into a custom album on pages I created. The vision is to tell a story of the country through stamps. Some sections that seem possible are: independence/founding of country, historical events/wars, leaders..especially during the past 200 years, geography, people, industry, etc.

The pages would have text that describes the stamps selected and weaves the description of the stamp into the greater story.

The goal would be to acquire the stamps, then create the album and after mounting the stamps the album would be finished and complete for that country.

Your idea sounds like a lot of work, but at the same time it sounds like a fantastic way to blend a love of history with stamp collecting. I'd say you should go for it.

Hi, for the super dooper special, I arrange the subject's pics and text on my computer for printing on special thick book paper, taking care to provide space somewhere on that "page" to stick the actual stamps in. Then print them out and put in the stamps.

For the album, its a special clear plastic page leaf, where you insert your printed page inside the clear plastic leaf. And since it's a binder, you can go to as many pages as you like.

Actually, mounting a country's stamps topically as you suggested, makes for a wonderful travelogue and informative presentation. After all, stamp collecting is a personal hobby to be devoped as one sees fit. However, I done what you have suggested and used blank ablum sheets and have both printed and manuscripted pages in my album.Also, topically
you can add stamps to a specific page
as they come available to you.
It is an open ended mounting scheme.

My worldwide collection is displayed on black Lighthouse brand stock sheets. I haven't done much stamp collecting since 1982 but am starting to sort through my accumulation. There may be as many as 20,000 different stamps. My goal is to properly identify all varieties but this is not easy. Many watermarks are obviously visible simply by holding the stamp in front of a lamp but this doesn't work for all of them. Many of the old British regulars are easy but the newer issues more than make up for it. If I can't identify the stamp to my satisfaction, it doesn't go into the collection. I don't know what my error rate is but I have learned over the years that I am not perfect. I am sure there are some errors in my collection.
