Three Cent Plating Aided By Adjacent Stamp.

This stamp is a perfect example of an adjacent stamp making plating easier.
In the photo, I circled an engravers slip. This slip is noted by Dr. Chase with plate position 96L4. My stamp being to the right...97L4.



For further discussion. If the left margin didn't show the adjacent stamp, we could still plate this stamp with confidence. At first glance, it looks like plate 4. No inside frame line (and not orange brown), Top and bottom frame lines recut heavy/strong, left frame line is weaker. These are characteristics of plate 4.

The large lower margin says, bottom row. So now we've narrowed it down to 20 stamps.

An outstanding characteristic I noticed, the upper frame line rises above the G of Postage and comes down lower and is closer to the O.

Luckily Stamp Smarter has an image of 97L4 and the top frame line matches.
