Any Old Hospitals? 1863 Jane Brown, Prov. RI

This hospital started it's journey in 1863. It has been transformed on it's interior to match any first class hospital. With private rooms, etc. it's exterior remains original, connected by a tunnel system to the main RI Hospital, and other buildings.

I have been blessed after surgeries, to have been admitted there.




Does anyone know when they started dating postcards?
My father's aunts were some of the earliest nurses from
The RI Hospital Nursing School. I still have their badges.

Depends on what you mean by 'dating'.

If you mean 'hobbyists trying to determine the date of the image or the date of publication', it has always been thus.

The US allowed the 'divided back' (separate message & address sections) from 19070301 (01/Mar/1907).

You can use google images to narrow-down the dates when wings were added to the building ...

... in one case, I was able to date a card by the height of the trees in the image.

Thanks ikey, I just started looking at some old cards.

I was wondering when dates had to be printed on post cards?

When you spoke of wings being added, I had read the history of 150 yrs.
of RI Hospital. This card was after wings were added!

When you next look at a commercial movie DVD case (my kids are giggling), try to find the copyright date.

It will be small, out of the way, perhaps buried in the middle of some credits text, and often printed in faint contrast.

Why? They do not want you to not buy or not rent the movie because you notice how old it is.

Postcards have much the same problem. No retailer wants to accept delivery of cards with a copyright date because those cards will be out of date ("old") in a matter of months.

You keep asking this question as if there was some *requirement* to put a date on a card; even if that strengthened any copyright, it weakened any sales.

While you are looking at your cards, keep a count of date/not, and post the results.

It should be noted that under current US laws; for works first published on or after March 1, 1989, use of the copyright notice is optional. Copyright is covered even if the work does not include a copyright notice.

I have succeeded in "trying to learn something new every day".

After looking at quite a few cards, I was surprised to only see dates
on five. Those were WW1 cards, probably given to soldiers to send home?

I also learned that it is better to look first, then ask less silly
