US 499 With Culebra Overprint

Any thoughts on this and its usage? Not sure if it is a Canal Zone overprint v. cancel v. ? Didn't notice the inverse "v" at left side of the bars until I scanned it.

Culebra just means Snake in Spanish. Could be a town in southern US. I do not believe it is from the Canal Zone.

You have the killer portion of a US Ship cancel - with the location within the 3-bar killer. Here is a slightly later example from another ship.

Looks like it could be part of a U.S. Navy postmark. Culebra is an island off Puerto Rico the Navy used as a gunnery and bombing range prior to and during WWII.

The USS Lexington was at Culebra, VI in March of 1932. I could not find a postmark with the name Culebra in it. There is also a Culebra in the Canal Zone.

Trainwreck has the correct answer. In the Canal Zone Culebra was a town sitting near the continental divide. Kind of rules out sea access.

I realize all that Smauggie, but what makes you think the original cancel has anything to do with the ocean? I am still trying to work on the USS Lexington though - I believe the 1932 voyage would be the most likely one.

The stamp was current c1920. Unlikely to be as late as c1932. The cancel could be from any number of US Navy ships which might have touched even briefly at Culebra, and almost impossible to identify a specific vessel.
