Design Issues?

I think that is supposed to be moon rising inside, well, the moon rising ...

... but is this card a montage, or a mess?

Cheers,

It is a mess ikey. What is that on top left, a tree with white spots?

It has the 1970's to 1980's look. Too many psychoactive chemicals around.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photomontage ... montage (the term used in the caption, above) is for an assemblage

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collage ... collage seems to mean making a coherent object or whole from bits'n'pieces

It that thing is a collage, what is that final shape?

Cheers,

Yep, same perplexing design as the Memphis card. The scenes look like they could appear on American tv's "Southpark". I almost expect to see Cartman peeking out from behind one of the bubbles.

J R Willis was an accomplished artist ... http://www.jrwillis.com/ ... Joseph Roy Willis (1876-1960)

Q/ So what are we to make of the chaotic shadows in this postcard? Artistic license? Commercial requirement?

While you're struggling with that Great Question, you can take a browse thru:

http://abclibrary.org/postcards ... the Albuquerque Historical Postcard Collection

Just in case you are thinking that the Nashville & Memphis design atrocities (above) are par for the course, here's a well-done montage from Singapore.

Q/ Can you make-out the month in the postmark?

Cheers,

This one faintly reminds me of some of (Abdul) Mati Klarwein's 1960's work.

Just saw these "montages"...

Not to be unkind, but I am shielding my eyes.
Montage as a means of assembling a design from existing imagery
can often be amazing, beautiful or charming. Unfortunately the posted cards are none of these things. But then again, I'm biased. After spending 40 years creating advertising and marketing communications, I hold a special place for great graphics.
