New Find Washington 2 Cent- A 88 Type Lll Or Type Lv?

Need help from the pros. I can't tell even when I'm reading it in Scott.If a IV, what kind of value? Just got this one with a bunch of 1900-1958 US stamps. Would appreciate the help.

#267 A 88 ? Still can't tell 3 from 4.Can't see a toga button.

Are you sure it's an 88?

KGB, I'm never sure. The more I get into this I find how clueless at times I am.I think it could be a 267 or a 279. Best guess.

Are you able to test for a watermark? 248-52 have none. 265-7 have a double line watermark as do 279B, C, and D.

Next we talk colors.

EDIT: Yes, it's an A88 design. Forgive me, but I thought you considered the stamp to be Sc nr. 88! (Yeah, I'm an idiot.)

KGB, No problemo. Just glad to have someone helping out with a second opinion which is needed. I will test with my handy Ronson tomorrow if I can. Sidenote; I'm going to South Carolina Tuesday to help out with the flooding problem ( Insurance Adjusting) and if I can't get to it tomorrow I will get'r'done when I get back next week. Thanks again. I thought it might be seen on the stamp front surface!

248 pink, type I
249 carmine lake, type I
250 carmine, type I
251 carmine, type II
252 carmine, type III

265 carmine, type I

279B red, type III
279C rose carmine, type III
279D orange red, type III
and--I missed this one--
279F deep red, type III

For the type, my Scott lists three possibilities: I, II, and III.

I believe you have a type III (where the lines in the triangle are thinner than those without and none of the lines cross the frame of the triangle.)

Watermark doesn't help as much as you'd think here. Do a much higher resolution scan so we can see the oval near the you of UNITED and the T of TWO. All type IVs are from the late printings, and there are lots of shades. You only need to watermark if it's a type III.

Looks like a type III, which means we do need the watermark. The type IV should have some of the lines from the vignette extend into the white curve and should have a straight edge at the top right of the T. I don't see an of the lines and your T has a tiny wiggle on that right edge.

I see what you are saying and concur. Narrows it to 252 carmine, type III
267 carmine, type III, I believe.Got to get the Ronson, will do today if I can.

I was looking at my A88 2 cents and while searching on the forum I found a lot of threads on the matter. All interesting.

I choose this particular one to show about type III and IV.

Two stamps on cover:

a) Type III with a machine cancellation from New Haven dated Nov 1st 1896. No watermark.

b) Type IV with machine cancellation from New York City dated Oct 17th 1898. Watermark is a complete double line U. Pretty well centered top part of the stamp.
