Hi, Where does kiloware come from? I know you can buy it a dealers, over eBay, &c, but where do the suppliers get it from? If I had to come up with many kilos of canceled on envelope stamps I would not know where to start.
Thanks
JP

Many church groups often have their members save the stamps froom their mail and deposit them in a big box at the church. From there, the stamps often get sold to people who sell kiloware. This is a form of fund-raising for the church.

Where ever it comes from..i would stay away from it..it took me a while to figure it out..but what does one do with 80 of the same stamp ? even if its a 2 dollar stamp..you might sell or trade 3 or 4 of them..take my experience or leave it..its your dough !! |

Kiloware is a term for packages of postage stamps sold to stamp collectors by weight rather than by quantity, often in kilograms, hence the name. Kiloware usually consists of used stamps on paper from mail clippings, although off paper stamps may also be sold as kiloware.
Well that is the official definition.
It is a great way for the beginner to start collecting because you should get far enough variety to fill many holes and have more than enough to trade or give away.
I like them and I find enough salt to make it worthwhile but then again I don't mind having many duplicates either.
I prefer to buy from places that offer theirs with stamps ranging from the book notes to the 1950's. I found a place that was doing this with tons of stamps bought from either collectors or out of business stamp dealers.
However some mail order ones can have way to many common modern stamps for my taste. |

If you are a variety collector (and / or dealer) kiloware is the only way to go. In the space of several hours you can assemble a stock book full of shift and colour variations that are a real pleasure to study.......and sometimes there's a variety in there that's worth a dolar or two. |

Quote: what is a salted stamp? "Salting" means to include a couple of more valuable, older, more distinctive or interesting items into a pile of kiloware. Frequently, these items are left on top of the pile and photographed this way to give the impression that the pile is more interesting or valuable. Dave |

I think we must be losing our touch here... how has this thread gone so long without a joke. Son, kiloware comes from when the mother stamp collection gets too close to the father stamp collection and they both become unhinged... ok, I know it's corny, but it was just too much to let it pass...

Kilo is a village in the Ciego de Ávila Province of Cuba. It is located in the northwest plain of Chambas Municipality and the nearest neighbor is Moron. Unfortunately, Kilo was destroyed by hurricane in 1985.
