First one I've seen with an actual street address. I google mapped 18 New Street in New York City, and all that is there now are skyscrapers. This is courtesy of Carroll & Stephens on an R82c.  |

Back in the late 1800s, New Street was next door to the NY Stock Exchange, so it makes perfect sense that the firm Carroll & Stephens was located there. It was probably an office building accommodating all sorts of similar firms. |

This is a revenue stamp, and this is not a postal cancellation. Probably the device used by the merchant who attached the revenue stamp to the original document.
Hopefully a revenue collector will jump in and clarify this for us. |

I noticed that New Street was one block over from Wall Street when looking at Google Maps. Yep, I'm aware that it is a Revenue stamp. I used the search function at the Revenue-Collector website and didn't get any hits for Carroll & Stephens. No luck with Google either. |

Almost certainly they were some kind of financial or insurance agents, that mostly what was there even then. This is pretty much the center of the island that far south. Closer to the water on both sides were much more diverse business areas. |

It was the tallest structure in North America at one time. At this point the Equitable Life Building was under construction but was not completed until 1870; it was the tallest inhabited building in the world at that time. However Trinity Church was the tallest structure until the New York World Building in 1890. |

If you have ever stood next to Trinity Church it is possible to imagine it. It's a tall spire, about 281 feet. |

Although this may not relate to the company shown in the cancel, it is taken from an 1880 financial page of a newspaper showing that 18 New Street, NYC was apparently an office building accommodating a number of financial and brokerage firms back in the day:  |

As Revenuecollector noted - street addresses are quite common. A quick search through a stockbook found these. interesting that these are all ovals from the 1868-69 period - probably the same device manufacturer.  |

If one stood by City Hall Park and there was no traffic on Broadway (as if that will ever happen) it might almost be possible to see it now, if the subway entrance is not in the way. |
