I'm guessing what looks like a tree - third row, third stamp.

Geoff, does that look like a cherry tree to you?

Was there a particular stamp or some stamps that caught your eye in this lot? Philatelic specialists are usually on the lookout for certain particular stamps. While I am not a specialist nor a collector of U.S. revenue stamps, the first stamp on the left in the first top row is giving me a philatelic signal. Am I right or wrong in an intuitive visual philatelic guess? (Other guesses would be the pair on the right side of the top row with full postmark and the second left stamp on the bottom row with two horizontal straight edges like a coil stamp.)

white you guys have a good eye. Third row third stamp has a Poland's White Pine Compound proprietary cancel. Our friend Dan the Revenuecollector has a blog post about his: http://www.revenue-collector.com/bl...110720.shtml
I probably should have set my max bid higher than $53 but with three kids in college right now I'm feeling pretty poor. In the end it was me and the other bidder with two high last minute bids so I'm sure his max bid may have been quite a bit higher.

Jenny

You can bet that, with my plant-killing skills, if I had a cherry tree it would look like that!

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Dan was aware of this lot. That pine tree cancellation kept him up at night for a long time ...

Actually, Dan missed this lot. I would have bid higher than that... the branch formation is different from mine though. Makes one wonder how many different designs were in play.

It's a very weak strike, it really doesn't seem worth much more than $50, if that.

Used by G. W. Swett of Boston on his Poland's White Pine Compound before he used his private die stamp. His newspaper ads show the EXACT SAME TREE!
