I have gotten back into my revenue collection and have gotten some of the narcotic Tax stamps. My question is what mounts are best for these stamps? I have RJA42, RJA43, 46 etc. Obviously the Scott mounts I have used for the rest of my collection won't work. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

You can buy longer strips of Showgard mounts. Something around 22mm high should do the trick. Slice them down to the proper size for mounting. |

Thanks I will look into the Showgard mounts. It is good to have a resource for those questions! |

Stock books. Then mounts can disappear, along with all the stamps they ruin. |

It depends on the mount. Some shrink over time, so if there is not enough room left the stamp gets damaged. Some have split backs, and over time in an album the split will ruin the gum. They add thickness to an album, so over time they sometimes cause uneven areas on pages that produce bends or even occasional creases. I have seen many nice stamps ruined by mounts. I hate mounts. And except for my boyhood album which I keep for sentimental reasons and a 1930's era album that I picked up somewhere, I have no albums either. |

I use Hawid mounts, but I find the glue stick (or otherwise sealing the top of the mount) to be unnecessary. Unless you plan to drop your album or otherwise treat it roughly, the stamps stay in the mounts just fine even if they are only sealed at the bottom. |

I have made my own by cutting out from clear plastic sheet protectors & folding into a sleeve to fit. I make sure I get the acid free ones. Not sure if this is ok long term or not. The pack says it is PVC free too but not being very learned in chemistry I don't know what that has to do with it. |

Until this year I had only used hinges. But when I began buying old albums most of the mounts used have been the black split back type. I suppose these work well enough for collectors who mount their mounts (pre-cut or self-trimmed) into standard albums. But when I opte3d for a hingeless album, I determined that sliding the stamps into the pre-mounted split-back mounts could easily damage some stamps. My first hingeless albums were Mystic American Heirloom Collection books for my classic US and BOB.
I became a proponent of the Howid-type top-loading clear mounts and after moving my classics into a new hingeless album, I also purchased a set of 3 out-of-print Scott Platinum Series hingeless albums produced in 1989 which also use the Howid-type mounts. Not sure why Scott stopped producing the Platinum Series. They're perfect for my needs (including Scott numbers). I guess too few were sold in the early 90's?
I have now moved over 80% of my US collection into hingeless books. And without any stamp damage. |
