I don't think 500 is a offset print though?

Not an offset... it's flat plate...

Whenever you're unsure about whether a stamp is offset or flat plate, first move the stamp back and forth under bright light... an offset will reflect the light... then run your index finger over the stamp... you can feel the ink ridges of a flat plate, whereas an offset (which is a photo essentially) is totally smooth to the touch...

But make sure that you:

1) wash both hands with soap & warm water, so you do not deposit dirt on the stamp, and

2) place the stamp on a perfectly flat surface, so you do not curl it, and

3) dip the intended index finger in alcohol, to remove/destroy any oil on your finger tip's skin, and

4) use a clean, dust-free hair dryer to evaporate any residual alcohol, and ...

... and I think the archival threads are getting to me.

Meanwhile, thank you, disi123, for the protocol.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Or, you can look at the back of the stamp to see if there is an offset of the stamp ink on the back. If there is, it is flat plate.

Is a #500 so easily identified? What made you recognize it immidiately? I have a used pair on that I have mulled over and over and still can't identify for sure.
Is it the pre-cancel?

Thank you one and all... quite happy here, of course...

[smauggie] : good tip about offset on the back...

[ikeyPikey] : you're quite welcomed... I'm a frantic hand washer before touching stamps... and thank *you* for your great tip as well... (smiling)

[rohumpy] : thank you as well... a wise man once told me... "if you don't look, you don't find"...

Here's another link on how to identify flat plate vs. offset printing.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
