I'd like to see this thread become a collection of first stamps issued by countries. I'll begin with the U.S. 5c Franklin from July 1, 1847 EDIT 7/18: Jamesw's recent post had me thinking that many of us likely don't have too many #1s of the regular issue so why don't we expand the thread to include the "back of book" first issuances as well (e.g., first air mail, special delivery, postage due, etc.).

Stamporator, that "beaver" is a beauty! Two questions. I see the word "York" in the selvedge, what was the meaning? And second, that scratch going through the OST of POSTAGE and through the border, is that a variety?

Hi Petert4522, The printers of the Canadian Pence Issue were 'Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson of New York'. I expect the 'York' that you see is from that. The only listed variations of this stamp are re-entries. This looks like it make be a scratch, and with the position known (i.e margin with 'York', one plate of 200 subjects), it could be easily compared to other printings to see if it is a constant scratch. I do not know! Edit:After providing the prior comment to Petert4522, it made me look at other Scott #1 beavers. Here is Scott 1TCi, Trial Colour (TC), brown red, with a horizontal Specimen in green. You can see the same scratch that Peter mentioned, and also the line through the beaver from the 'P' in postage down to the lower left. - stamporator - |

Great idea for a thread! Alas, I have no #1s, but I love seeing all these others! |

Spain #1, issued Jan 1, 1850. This one is dated, as far as I have always been able to tell, Jan 3, 1850. |
